20 Celebs who came out of retirement (and some we wish would)

They said goodbye… but couldn’t stay away for long.
Retirement in Hollywood is more of a suggestion than a rule, especially when there’s a good script, a massive paycheck, or a stadium full of screaming fans waiting on the other side.

From legendary actors to pop stars and even a certain basketball icon, these 20 celebrities said “I’m done”, only to surprise everyone with a comeback that made headlines. Some returned for the love of the game. Others? Well… let’s just say the bills don’t pay themselves.

Here’s a look at the stars who walked away, only to walk right back into the spotlight. And those we wish would make a comeback.

After nearly a decade away from the spotlight, she’s back in action (literally) starring alongside Jamie Foxx in Back in Action. Looks like Hollywood missed her just as much as all of us did.

She said goodbye to touring back in 2000… and then again in 2006. And again in 2012. And 2016.
Let’s be honest. There’s no such thing as a “final concert” when it comes to Babs.

She’s “retired” more times than we can count, only to come back every time with a new wig, a new tour, and the same iconic energy. Because it’s Cher, babe.

He took a long break after his child star years, but has returned in indie films with a totally different (and very cool) vibe. And yes, he’s still adorable.

15. Phil Collins

Health issues forced him to step back, but he powered through for one last Genesis tour that had fans in tears. A real icon.

16. Joaquin Phoenix

He went through a very weird phase that felt like retirement… then came Joker, and we all shut up. When he returns, he doesn’t miss.

After 25, she basically disappeared for years. Then came back with 30 and shattered hearts (and charts) all over again. Queen of the slow burn comeback.

After iconic childhood roles in Indiana Jones and The Goonies, he disappeared from Hollywood for decades. Then came Everything Everywhere All at Once, and an Oscar with it. One of the most heartwarming comebacks in recent memory.

20. Rihanna

After ANTI, she vanished from music to build a beauty empire. Just when we thought she was done with performing, she dropped into the Super Bowl like it was nothing. Still waiting on that album though…
