25 Remakes That Should Have Been Left in the Vault

25 Remakes That Should Have Been Left in the Vault

Hollywood has a habit of finding something we loved, digging it out of the vault, and deciding it needs a makeover. Sometimes a reboot gives a classic a fresh life. Other times, it makes us want to personally guard the original with our lives. These are the reboots and remakes that had us wondering why Hollywood simply couldn’t leave well enough alone.

The Munsters (2022)

The original The Munsters already had the perfect combination of spooky, silly, and wonderfully weird. Rob Zombie brought the family back in 2022, but some things are better left happily haunting the past.

Mean Girls (2024)

Nobody asked the Plastics to come back to school, especially when we already knew every hallway, cafeteria table, and burn book page by heart. The 2024 version turned the story into a musical, but the original had already done the job.

The Crow (2024)

Some movies have a perfectly good reason to stay untouched. The Crow was one of them. The 2024 remake stepped into the shadow of the 1994 cult classic, leaving plenty of fans wondering why Hollywood couldn’t just let this one rest.

Road House (2024)

Was anyone sitting around thinking, “You know what Road House needs? A remake”? Apparently someone was. The 2024 version brought Jake Gyllenhaal into the legendary bouncer role, but the original already knew exactly how to throw a punch.

Point Break (2015)

The original Point Break had surfing, skydiving, bank robbers, Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, and enough ’90s cool to fill several oceans. The 2015 remake showed up anyway, apparently believing we had somehow forgotten.

Total Recall (2012)

Arnold Schwarzenegger had already taken us to Mars and back, so naturally Hollywood decided we needed another trip. The 2012 remake swapped out the original’s wonderfully bizarre sci fi chaos for a much more grounded affair.

RoboCop (2014)

RoboCop was already patrolling the future just fine, thank you very much. The 2014 remake gave the iconic cyborg a new look and a lighter makeover, but sometimes the old metal suit is exactly the one you want.

The Mummy (2017)

The Mummy (2017)

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy gave us adventure, ancient curses, comedy, romance, and a terrifying desert villain. Then the 2017 reboot decided it needed to be something else entirely. We were still waiting for Rick O’Connell to come back.

Ghostbusters (2016)

Nobody was asking New York’s favorite ghost hunters to be replaced. The 2016 Ghostbusters gave the franchise a new cast and a new story, but trying to follow the original was always going to be a paranormal level challenge.

Baywatch (2017)

Baywatch (2017)
Paramount Pictures via MovieStillsDB

The original Baywatch already had slow motion running, ridiculous rescues, and enough beach drama to last a lifetime. The 2017 movie decided to turn it into an action comedy, because apparently the lifeguards needed a cinematic universe too.

CHiPs (2017)

California highways had survived perfectly well without a CHiPs movie for decades. Then the 2017 adaptation arrived, turning the beloved motorcycle cops into a raunchy buddy comedy that was very different from the original series.

Flatliners (2017)

Flatliners (2017)
Sony Pictures via MovieStillsDB

The 1990 Flatliners already asked the very important question of what happens when medical students mess around with death. The 2017 remake asked the same question again. Apparently nobody had written down the answer the first time.

Pet Sematary (2019)

Stephen King’s creepy cemetery had already given audiences nightmares, but apparently one trip to the burial ground wasn’t enough. The 2019 remake dug everything back up and tried to give the story a new spin.

Child’s Play (2019)

Chucky had been terrorizing people perfectly well without Wi Fi, artificial intelligence, or smart home technology. The 2019 remake decided that what this murderous doll really needed was a technological upgrade. Absolutely nobody asked Chucky to become tech support.

The Witches (2020)

Anjelica Huston had already given generations of children a reason to fear suspiciously glamorous women in The Witches. The 2020 remake brought the story back with a new cast, but some childhood nightmares simply deserve to remain untouched.

The Lion King (2019)

We already knew every song. We already knew every line. We already knew exactly what happened to Mufasa. Yet Hollywood looked at The Lion King and apparently thought, “Let’s do that again, but make everyone look real.”

Pinocchio (2022)

Pinocchio (2022)

Disney’s animated Pinocchio was already one of the most beloved fairy tale movies ever made. The 2022 remake brought the wooden boy back in live action, because apparently even talking puppets need a reboot these days.

The Little Mermaid (2023)

Ariel had already stolen our hearts, Sebastian had already given us the soundtrack of our childhood, and Ursula was already terrifying enough. The 2023 live action remake simply decided it was time to visit Atlantica all over again. Why? We could not tell you.

Home Sweet Home Alone (2021)

Kevin McCallister’s house had already taught us everything we needed to know about home security. Home Sweet Home Alone brought the concept back with a new kid, new burglars, and absolutely no shortage of people wondering where Kevin was.

The Karate Kid (2010)

Wax on, wax off. We knew the drill. The 2010 Karate Kid reboot moved the story to China and replaced Mr. Miyagi with Jackie Chan, giving the classic story a completely new setting.

Fantastic Four (2015)

The Fantastic Four have been rebooted so many times that even Doctor Doom might be getting tired. The 2015 version tried to give Marvel’s first family a darker, more serious treatment, but the results left many viewers wishing they could rewind to an earlier version.

Charlie’s Angels (2019)

Charlie's Angels (2019)
Sony Pictures via MovieStillsDB

The Angels had already saved the world, looked fabulous doing it, and given us enough hair flips for several generations. The 2019 movie brought the franchise back with a new team, but the earlier films had already made the assignment look easy.

The Pink Panther (2006)

Peter Sellers’ Inspector Clouseau was already a comedy institution. Steve Martin stepped into the role in 2006, giving audiences a new version of the famously accident prone detective. But some comedy icons really do come with a very specific pair of shoes to fill.

Bewitched (2005)

Bewitched (2005)

Samantha Stephens could twitch her nose and turn the world upside down without needing a cinematic reboot. The 2005 movie tried something much more meta, but fans of the original sitcom were perfectly capable of enjoying their magic the old fashioned way.

That ’90s Show (2023)

That ’70s Show gave us basement hangouts, questionable decisions, and a generation of characters we actually remembered. Then came That ’90s Show, because apparently the next decade was just sitting there waiting for a sequel series.
