Jim Jones
Jim Jones founded the Peoples Temple in the 1950s, presenting it as a church focused on racial equality and social justice. In 1978, he ordered more than 900 followers living in Jonestown, Guyana, to consume a cyanide-laced drink, creating one of the deadliest cult tragedies in history.
Charles Manson
Charles Manson led the Manson Family, a cult that believed an apocalyptic race war was imminent. In 1969, he directed followers to murder seven people over two nights, including actress Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant. Although Manson did not personally carry out the killings, he was convicted of orchestrating them.
David Koresh
David Koresh became the leader of the Branch Davidians, claiming he alone could interpret biblical prophecy. A 51-day siege between his compound near Waco, Texas, and federal agents ended in April 1993 when a fire engulfed the buildings, killing Koresh and more than 70 followers, including over 20 children.
Shoko Asahara
Asahara founded Aum Shinrikyo, a Japanese doomsday cult that mixed Buddhism, Hinduism, and apocalyptic beliefs. In 1995, the group released sarin nerve gas on the Tokyo subway, killing 13 people and injuring more than 5,000. He was executed in 2018.
Marshall Applewhite
Applewhite taught that Earth was about to be “recycled” and that believers could escape by leaving their human bodies. In 1997, he and 38 followers died by mass life-ending in California, believing their souls would board an alien spacecraft supposedly hidden behind Comet Hale-Bopp.
Keith Raniere
Raniere founded NXIVM as a self-improvement organization before secretly creating an inner group called DOS, where women were branded with his initials, forced into relationships, and controlled through blackmail. He was sentenced to 120 years in prison in 2020.
Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
Rajneesh established a huge commune in Oregon during the 1980s. Senior members of his organization later carried out the 1984 salmonella attack that poisoned more than 750 people in an attempt to influence a local election. He was also deported from the United States after pleading guilty to immigration fraud.
Warren Jeffs
Jeffs became leader of the FLDS Church, a fundamentalist Mormon sect that practiced polygamy. He arranged marriages involving underage girls and adult men and was convicted in 2011 on CSA charges, receiving a life sentence.
Luc Jouret
Jouret served as the public face of the Solar Temple and traveled internationally recruiting followers. He died alongside many members during the first wave of the group’s mass deaths in Switzerland.
Roch Thériault
Leading the Ant Hill Kids cult in rural Canada, Thériault performed amateur surgeries on followers without anesthesia, amputated limbs, and committed numerous acts of torture. He was convicted of murder in 1993.

Hamilton-Byrne claimed she was the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. She adopted and abducted dozens of children, forcing them to dress identically, bleaching their hair blonde, and subjecting them to harsh punishments and LSD experiments.
Paul Schäfer
Schäfer founded Colonia Dignidad in Chile, an isolated settlement where children were mistreated, adults were forced into labor, and families were separated. During Chile’s military dictatorship, the colony also served as a torture center for political prisoners.
Moses David Berg
Berg founded the Children of God movement in 1968. He promoted practices such as “flirty fishing,” encouraging female members to recruit converts through relationships, while numerous allegations of child mistreatment later emerged within the organization.
Hong Xiuquan
Hong claimed he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ and established the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. His movement sparked the Taiping Rebellion, which lasted from 1850 to 1864 and caused an estimated 20 to 30 million deaths.
Claude Vorilhon
A French motoring journalist and former racing driver, Vorilhon claimed that in 1973 he was contacted by extraterrestrials called the Elohim, who told him they had created humanity through genetic engineering and renamed him Raël. He founded the Raëlian movement in 1974, and it went on to promote human cloning through a company called Clonaid, drawing global attention in 2002 when it claimed to have produced the first cloned baby — a claim never substantiated.
José Luis de Jesús Miranda
Miranda declared himself both the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and later the Antichrist. Many followers tattooed the number 666 on their bodies after he claimed it had become a sacred symbol.
Father Yod
Father Yod founded the Source Family in Los Angeles during the early 1970s. Members lived communally, followed strict diets, surrendered their possessions, and treated him as an enlightened spiritual master.
Bonnie Nettles
