28 Overplayed artists who should consider retirement

Music is continuously evolving, but some performers appear to have overstayed their welcome, filling the airwaves with the same old songs. Here, we’ll highlight 28 overplayed artists who should consider taking a step back and allowing new talent to take the stage this year. No offense intended, this is purely based on our opinions, of course.

1. Ariana Grande

@Reddit

This may offend younger generations, but older generations are likely smiling with glee. Ariana has had some major hits, such as “Dangerous Woman,” but Grande’s music and impact are oriented at younger people, and despite her continuous popularity, her most recent songs are overplayed for months after release.

2. Adam Levine

@Reddit

Levine’s popular songs include “Payphone” and “She Will Be Loved.” However, his peak may be behind him. Many of the tracks that Levine frequently plays are older. You’ve probably heard them at the mall, the grocery store, or at work.

3. Celine Dion

@Reddit

Even if you’ve never seen Titanic, you’ve probably met someone who can’t stop talking about it or the moving ballad “My Heart Will Go On.” And although Dion has a great voice, many of her songs aren’t particularly popular.

4. Christina Aguilera

@Reddit

It’s no secret that Aguilera possesses a powerful voice. She was even known as the “Voice of a Generation.” But was her voice used too frequently at the height of her fame? Even if you don’t hear much from her anymore, her previous songs are frequently broadcast in the media.

5. Neil Young

@Reddit

At 78 years old, this talented singer continues to keep rocking the stage for his diehard fans. However, some might claim he is overplayed, but once he hits the hay, his songs will continue to be played for generations to come.

6. Bruce Springsteen

@Reddit

Bruce has had a six-decade career, most of which he spent with his group, the E Street Band. You can’t deny that Springsteen has some catchy songs, such as “Dancing in the Dark”, but his recent tours show his voice and energy no longer match the music’s intensity.

7. Bob Dylan

@Reddit

Dylan, an infamous blues legend, rose to prominence in the 1960s and has had an amazing career. However, some may argue that his music has recently halted in popularity. The younger generation presumably has no idea who the 80-year-old singer is, and if they heard one of his songs, they would immediately cover their ears.

8. Drake

@Reddit

The rapper popularized R&B impressions in hip-hop, making him a well-known personality in the music industry. Is his music excellent enough to listen to repeatedly? That is up to you to decide, but we personally do not want to hear “God’s Plan” ever again.

9. U2

@Reddit

U2’s astronomical fame may be more acceptable if the band wasn’t so obsessed with themselves and their music. The band has been around for decades and has received more than its fair share of airtime. To make matters worse, in 2014, they forced their new album, “Songs of Innocence”, on everybody with an iTunes account.

10. Panic at the Disco

@Reddit

Even if you weren’t an emotional teenager in the 2000s, you’ve probably met someone who couldn’t stop talking about Panic at the Disco. And they became renowned for all the wrong reasons. We understand that the band consists of young, gorgeous men but let’s be honest here, and stop pretending that anyone wants to listen to them rather than look at them.

11. Dolly Parton

@Reddit

Parton is a country music icon, but if we have to hear “Jolene” one more time, things will not be pleasant. We guess we can’t blame her for being very popular. Even while the history books may see her as a pioneer for women in country music, all of the things she is praised for (such as her prolific songwriting) had been done for years by other countrywomen, such as Bobbie Gentry.

12. Lil Nas X

@Reddit

We blame the 2019 nightmare tune “Old Town Road” for our exhaustion regarding this singer. The song managed to merge the worlds of country and rap, which would have been spectacular if the rapper had combined the greatest aspects of the two genres rather than the worst.

13. Vampire Weekend

@Reddit

The world was bad enough when society independently had opinions about the Oxford comma, but things just got so much worse once VW released their single about it. You couldn’t escape it then, and sometimes we still have nightmares about it.

14. Queen

@Reddit

Here, we’ll shatter many hearts, but here we go. Without Freddie Mercury, Queen has become more of a nostalgia act than a groundbreaking band. While Adam Lambert is talented, the magic that defined Queen can’t truly be replicated, and continuing risks diluting their legacy. Retiring would preserve their legendary status instead of stretching it thin.

15. Cardi B

@Reddit

Cardi B was having a moment in 2020, but maybe this will pass shortly. Because her new track was overplayed from the minute the first person pressed the play button. Count yourself lucky if you haven’t heard the terrible hit “WAP”.

16. Rush

@Reddit

Rush was a hugely successful and skilled progressive rock band, and like other rock legends, their most recognized singles are played endlessly on classic rock stations across the country. Regardless, they all eventually get overplayed. After hearing “Closer to the Heart” 50 times, the concept of loving your neighbor and working for the greater good begins to appear ridiculous.

17. The Steve Miller Band

@Reddit

When “The Joker” comes on, everyone becomes a Steve Miller Band fan. Unfortunately, that is the only tune they appear to play. While being a space cowboy or a love gangster seems like a lot of fun, it gets fairly annoying after the fourth time you hear it at karaoke tonight.

18. Katy Perry

@Reddit

Everyone in the world appears to be over Katy Perry, yet we can’t seem to get rid of her. We’re sure we’ll be forced to listen to her insipid singles for the foreseeable future. Perry does not write her songs; why should one of the world’s most famous musicians do so, right?

19. BTS

@Reddit

BTS, a Korean boy band, is definitely overplayed and overrated. How do we know? Because even though we’ve never heard a song by them, we can’t stop hearing about them. We are sure they’re no more annoying than any other boy band in the world, but that doesn’t say much.

20. Kansas

@Reddit

You may keep on any you want, but you’ll never persuade us that late Kansas’ stadium rock choruses are more deserving of airplay than their debut album, which just so happened to be a prog rock masterpiece. It was all downhill for Kansas after that, yet many seem to forget that the band existed before “Dust in the Wind.”

21. Madonna

@Reddit

This lady is now almost synonymous with the 1980s, so there isn’t much we can do. But it didn’t have to be this way. Sure, the Queen of Pop produced some fantastic tunes in her heyday. However, we’re just not sure why every “Best of the 80s” playlist or CD appears to be 95% Madonna.

22. Justin Bieber

@Reddit

From his humble origins as a Canadian tween sensation to his current existence as a grown man who still acts like a tween, Justin Bieber has never been out of the spotlight. Perhaps it is time for the “Baby” singer to retire.

23. Beyoncé

@Reddit

It’s terrible enough that Beyoncé is overused and overdone. What makes matters worse are her gullible admirers, who believe she is the greatest musician to have ever lived. Unfortunately, we have some bad news for the Beyhive: Beyoncé isn’t even the best pop performer of the last decade, let alone all time.

24. Miley Cyrus

@Reddit

Miley is a pop chameleon who is constantly changing things up. Remember her Hannah Montana days? Now she sings anything from “Jolene” to powerful rock ballads. Her music is popular, but the music video for “Wrecking Ball” took the world by surprise. That catchiness, however, can be a double-edged blade, making her extremely obnoxious after hearing the song on the radio for a year straight.

25. Taylor Swift

@Reddit

Swift is a pop music powerhouse. She began by singing country songs about teenage love difficulties, but now she’s all about massive pop smashes. There’s no doubting her success; her tunes are infectious and will stay with you forever. What’s the problem? They might be a bit too catchy. You can hear them everywhere!

26. Metallica

@Reddit

Metallica, like many of the other performers on this list, is far from horrible. We are just sick of hearing them. If you listen to any rock radio station in the country, you’re likely to hear “Master of Puppets” or “Enter Sandman” booming through your speakers. For any DJs out there, there is classic rock other than Metallica.

27. Ed Sheeran

@Reddit

If you hear a song about love, breakups, or longing for someone, it’s typically by Ed Sheeran. Don’t get me wrong, he has some touching songs, like “Perfect” and “Thinking Out Loud,” but all of the performers’ songs are the same, just with a different typeface.

28. Kanye West

@Reddit

To put it simply, West has few, if any, good songs. Today, he is better renowned for his public controversies (like the one at the 2025 Grammys Red Carpet) than his music. So, why are we still playing his songs? He has insulted several musicians, the most well-known of which is Taylor Swift, and we do not believe someone who thrives on animosity should be played on the radio or in the media.
