Sometimes, even the biggest stars in the movie industry occasionally fall into obscurity since stardom can be short-lived. Come along as we discover 30 outstanding performers who enthralled audiences in the past but have since faded from view.
1. Charlie Hunnam
The English actor is still around, but his last good movie was in 2019, and it looks like he’s going back to television roles with no current or upcoming movies coming out for him. So we’d say he didn’t blow up as a movie star like most predicted after Sons of Anarchy
2. Haley Joel Osment
The Sixth Sense child star stole the show in everything he was in as a kid. And we can see he does a lot of voice acting, but we wish he could somehow get a really solid role in something sneaky good in film festivals or something to give him a chance at a resurgence
3. Moon Bloodgood
We always thought Moon Bloodgood was headed for stardom. Her name alone seemed destined for greatness. She did a great job in Terminator Salvation and as Anne Glass in the TNT television series Falling Skies.
4. Joel Kinnaman
After watching The Killing, we were surprised that he pivoted into action roles. He definitely seems better suited for drama.
5. Skeet Ulrich
We certainly do not know why the Scream star didn’t have a big-time career. He always gave a top-grade performance in his younger years. I think his resemblance to Johnny Depp hurt him in the long run. The studio executives figured as he got older, his appeal would fade away
6. Leelee Sobieski
The American actress wanted to raise her children, which is a very noble reason to quit the medium. The Glass House actress explained that she currently assists her husband, Adam Kimmel, in his fashion design work, while also developing a painting career of her own.
7. Michael Shannon
We are shocked to learn Shannon hasn’t blown up in a big way. We feel like he was on his way, and then chose Zod in the Snyderverse, which didn’t pan out. Honestly, the Knives Out star is an amazing actor and will keep getting work into his golden years
8. Alicia Vikander
Specifically, after Ex Machina and her Oscar win the same year for The Danish Girl, she seems to have vanished. Tomb Raider wasn’t a big hit, and we completely forgot she was in Jason Bourne. From what we know, she started a family with Michael Fassbender and has done some more movies, but nothing huge.
9. Wes Bentley
Off-screen, Wes has shown the same level of determination and courage, using his platform to share his story and advocate for mental health and sobriety. Fifteen years sober is an extraordinary achievement, and it’s a reflection of Wes’s courage, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to his personal growth. We wish the American Beauty actor all the best.
10. Sam Witwer
Today, Sam Witwer is a voice actor with plenty of roles under his belt. He has secured roles in multiple Star Wars Projects such as Darth Maul and The Apprentice in The Force Unleashed, Soulcalibur IV, Robot Chicken, and Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores.
11. Patrick Fugit
Some say that Patrick was so good in Almost Famous and then just disappeared. However, he has appeared in the films White Oleander (2002), Spun (2003), and Saved! (2004) and Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006), and portrayed Kyle Barnes in the Cinemax series Outcast.
12. Leighton Meester
Fans say that she was not only drop-dead gorgeous but also the best actor on Gossip Girl. Leighton appeared in The Buccaneers and also in How I Met Your Father, The Weekend Away, and EXmas. She has also done singing and Broadway acting. But nothing as big as her role in the teen drama television series.
13. Matt Bomer
Matt had a very successful career. We just thought Bomer would be an A-lister someday, like a Brad Pitt-level star. Now, he’s doing voice work and maybe going back to TV. And we cannot wait.
14. Aaron Paul
The actor and film producer was remarkable in Breaking Bad and then did a couple of movies because studios knew they’d make bank off his name, and now he’s just disappeared
15. Taylor Kitsch
Kitsch has been active on the TV scene still in the time since Friday Night Lights officially ended back in 2011. He’s in the popular series The Terminal List, which has Season 2 on the way.
16. Michael Pitt
We always thought Micheal Pitt was gonna be huge. In July 2022, the Last Days actor was arrested and charged with assault and petty larceny after allegedly hitting another man multiple times and taking his phone.
17. Lizzy Caplan
Caplan became engaged to British actor Tom Riley in New York in May 2016. They had met in January 2015 while Caplan was filming Now You See Me 2 in London and made their red carpet debut as a couple at the Prague Opera Ball in February 2016. The Mean Girls star has a son born in 2021.
18. Olga Kurylenko
We rewatched Quantum of Solace recently and thought her performance was excellent. She had a great character and the movie was far better than we remembered too
19. Seann William Scott
He could have been the first Ryan Reynolds, not sure what happened, but pretty sure it was his MTV Cribs that soured him on everyone. In film, Scott is best known for his breakout role as Steve Stifler in the American Pie film series.
20. Anson Mount
He has come a long way from being in the teenager coming-of-age flick Crossroads. The actor-writer keeps himself pretty busy with having a lot of irons in his own fire. He is currently playing Captain Christopher Pike in the TV series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
21. Tia Carrere
Fans know that Tia is still acting and performing, and she’s been in many films and TV shows. She’s known for her roles in Wayne’s World, True Lies, Lilo & Stitch, AJ & the Queen, and Never Have I Ever.
22. Summer Glau
Summer Glau has had a successful career in film and TV and has also advocated for science fiction fans. Summer has been married to Val Morrison since 2014 and they have two daughters.
23. Aaron Eckhart
He was the second-best actor in The Dark Knight after Heath Ledger, but after that, he has mostly done less popular action movies, such as London Has Fallen and Olympus Has Fallen.
24. Michael Biehn
He really should’ve had more important roles than he did after his appearances in The Terminator and Aliens, but some say alcoholism held him back. It is believed that he will return to action cinema with Adam Wingard’s Onslaught.
25. Paula Patton
Although she had a few good parts, we honestly thought she would start making a name for herself as a major actor after watching her in Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol as Jane Carter. Things only got worse when she didn’t come back for the next M.I. movie, and we hardly ever hear about her now.
26. Gemma Arterton
After her stage debut in Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost at the Globe Theatre, Arterton made her feature-film debut in the comedy St Trinian’s. Gemma was a lead in Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia and was even a Bond girl but her career just faded.
27. Mia Sara
Mia Sara, who played Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend, was predicted to become a sensation when his film Day Off was released. She was even predicted to be the next big thing by Siskel and Ebert, as we recall. She played a few tiny parts but never became as well-known as many had thought.
28. Clive Owen
When Clive Owen’s career plateaued, we felt he was on the verge of becoming a superstar. He simply vanished into a slew of obscure endeavors. Then, suddenly, we noticed that he seemed to be advertising one miniseries annually.
29. Claire Forlani
Born in 1971, English actress Claire Forlani rose to recognition in the 1990s thanks to her parts in Mallrats, The Rock, and Meet Joe Black. She switched to television in recent years, starring in Camelot and Departure, and making appearances in shows including CSI: NY, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Hawaii Five-0. She became a member of the cast of Cruel Intentions in 2024. Had a son and has been married to actor Dougray Scott since 2007.
30. Tessa Thompson
Tessa is known for roles in Creed, Valkyrie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Selma. She has also starred in Westworld. Today, she seems to be involved in music and is set to appear in the Netflix series His & Hers.
