30 TV shows that were canceled for a reason

TV shows like “The Flying Nun”, “AfterMASH”, and “Fate: The Winx Saga” promised to keep us glued to our screens. But despite having (more or less) successful early runs, these and other TV series eventually failed to endure. So, today, we’re here to examine the television programs that had great potential yet failed.

1. Supertrain

@Reddit

A television show about a national train that chronicles the lives of its diverse passengers would seem intriguing, but, apparently, “Supertrain” fell short. This trainwreck of a program only lasted one season and has a 4.5 out of 10 rating on IMDB.

2. The Powers of Matthew Star

@Reddit

Even if a lot of people enjoy watching movies and TV episodes with alien themes, not everyone is the same. So, after just one season in 1982, “The Powers of Matthew Star”, which centers on a teenage high school student named Matthew who is actually an alien prince from a different galaxy, was largely a failure.

3. The Phyllis Diller Show

@Reddit

Not every television program can have the same level of success following its premiere, even though some do. In 1966, it seems that the public did not want to follow a wealthy family that was attempting to maintain the appearance of luxury while, in fact, there was no money.

4. Ratched

@Reddit

In September 2020, the psychological thriller series “Ratched” made its Netflix debut. The nurse Ratched character from Ken Kesey’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” served as the inspiration for this show. But by February 2024, Netflix terminated “Ratched” after just one season.

5. You’re in the Picture

@Reddit

Given that there were just two episodes of the American game show “You’re in the Picture” when it debuted on CBS in 1961, it’s likely that you don’t recall it. Pat Harrington Jr., Pat Carroll, Jan Sterling, and Arthur Treacher were among the four prominent panelists who were supposed to place their heads inside a photo frame that showed a portion of a well-known scene or song and then take turns speculating as to which scene they were in.

6. One of the Boys

@Reddit

This sitcom debuted on NBC in 1982 and starred Mickey Rooney, Dana Carvey, and Nathan Lane. It followed an elderly man who, together with his young grandson and pals, left his retirement home to live in a college dorm. Although the idea for a sitcom seems adorable and promising, it was a complete failure and was canceled after just one season.

7. One of Us Is Lying

@Reddit

“One of Us Is Lying” wasn’t canceled by Netflix; rather, Peacock did so after two seasons because, in spite of favorable reviews on the show’s creative merits, it didn’t draw in enough viewers to warrant additional seasons.

8. Ferris Bueller

@Reddit

“Ferris Bueller” may hold a special place in the hearts of those who grew up in the 1990s, but if we’re being totally honest, the program wasn’t very popular. Although Jennifer Anniston played a major role, it lacked the charisma of Matthew Broderick and John Hughes, and as a result, it failed and was canceled after just one season.

9. Dirty Dancing

@Reddit

McLean Stevenson and Melora Hardin starred in the 1988 television drama “Dirty Dancing”. But only eleven episodes of the show were shown, making it essentially a failure from the beginning. Viewers at the time claimed that the show was excessively sentimental and soap operatic, yet we are unsure of what exactly caused it to be abruptly canceled.

10. Life with Lucy

@Reddit

When it debuted in 1986, the American sitcom “Life with Lucy” sounded promising enough, but it was canceled after just one season because it was unable to draw viewers. The sitcom, which starred renowned actress Lucille Ball as the title character, did not connect with viewers.

11. Manimal

@Reddit

The 1983 television program “Manimal” was essentially a complete failure from the start. It only lasted seven episodes before being pulled off the air. The show’s main character, Dr. Jonathan Chase, had the unusual power to change into any animal he desires.

12. Hee Haw Honeys

@Reddit

“Hee Haw Honeys” is another seventies program that, in spite of its all-star ensemble, failed. Despite having music scores by the top country performers of the day, the show was a failure to draw viewers. After just one season, it was finally terminated, and probably only Baby Boomers remember it.

13. The Brady Bunch Hour

@Reddit

This was a nostalgic variety show from the 1970s that brought the cherished Brady Bunch cast back together. In what was called a “show within a show,” the original actors of “The Brady Bunch Hour” played a fictionalized version of themselves.

14. Flying High

@Reddit

In the late 1970s, the television program “Flying High” chronicled the exploits of three vivacious flight attendants employed by Sun West Airlines. And though it had its period and was rather popular in the late 1970s, the program ultimately failed to stand the test of time and was canceled after two seasons.

15. Co-Ed Fever

@Reddit

After the success of “National Lampoon’s Animal House” (1978), the American sitcom “Co-Ed Fever” debuted in 1979. Sadly, it fell short of its goal of capturing the same spirit of collegiate fraternity life. Despite having great expectations, the show was unable to draw viewers due to excessive competition.

16. Woops!

@Reddit

In 1992, the short-lived sitcom “Woops!” debuted buy was eventually canceled. It followed the efforts of six nuclear bomb survivors to reconstruct society. Well, that sounded pretty insensitive so critics and audiences alike were quick to roast it.

17. Homeboys in Outer Space

@Reddit

If you have never heard of “Homeboys in Outer Space”, we wouldn’t blame you. It was a mid-1990s television program that chronicles the future space travels of two buddies. There were many excellent TV series in the 1990s that were difficult to compete with, and this one simply didn’t cut the cut.

18. The Chevy Chase Show

@Reddit

Chevy Chase’s comedic skills are likely well-known to you from his appearances on Saturday Night Live and the hit show Community. But did you know that “The Chevy Chase Show” was his own talk show? Some say his dubious actions on set prevented the show from becoming popular.

19. The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer

@Reddit

Actor Chi McBride plays the title character in “The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer”, a British nobleman who escapes his debts and becomes President Lincoln’s valet. Although the show’s premise seems entertaining enough, its dark humor and occasionally discriminatory themes caused a great deal of controversy. And due to these controversies, it was discontinued after one season.

20. Hello, Larry

@Reddit

Another sitcom from the 1970s that didn’t catch on and was canceled within a year after 38 episodes were filmed is “Hello, Larry”. The show was promising because it starred well-known comic McLean Stevenson, but it ultimately failed to impress critics and audiences.

21. The Flying Nun

@Reddit

In the late 1960s sitcom “The Flying Nun”, Sally Field plays Sister Bertrille, a nun who can fly thanks to a special headpiece. Sally Field went so far as to apologize for her involvement in the performance. However, despite its peculiar premise, the show had a devoted following in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but it is now a relic of a bygone era.

22. AfterMASH

@Reddit

Following the popularity of the television program “M*A*S*H” in the 1970s, an ambitious spin-off attempted to replicate the original’s level of success. And, although the spin-off brought several of the original actors back together, it was unable to match the magic of the first one. After two seasons, it was discontinued because it was deemed a huge failure.

23. Cop Rock

@Reddit

In 1990, ABC broadcast the police drama “Cop Rock”. A program about cops in LA would need to be quite different to thrive, and “Cop Rock” simply didn’t. This show only aired eleven episodes and was seen as a failure due to its surprise musical numbers and police drama.

24. My Mother the Car

@Reddit

“My Mother the Car” is a unique sitcom that may only be familiar to some Baby Boomers. The show, which stars Jerry Van Dyke as Dave Crabtree, centers on a man who buys a new car and discovers it is a reincarnation of his mother, who passed away. Sadly, the show was canceled after just one season.

25. The Ugliest Girl in Town

@Reddit

This American sitcom chronicled the experiences of a man who worked as a talent agent and pretended to be a woman in order to get a chance to spend time with an actress he had developed feelings for. Generally regarded as one of the worst TV series ever produced, it wasn’t well received at the time.

26. Fate: The Winx Saga

@Reddit

Reviews of this series were generally negative. People complained about anything from the storyline to the CGI, the grim and gloomy reimagining of a popular children’s show, whitewashing, and so on. Due to the underwhelming response, Netflix just decided to discontinue it after two seasons.

27. Lockwood & Co.

@Reddit

Netflix canceled “Lockwood & Co.” after just one season. Based on Jonathan Stroud’s eponymous young adult novels, the supernatural detective series was created by Joe Cornish under his Complete Fiction imprint and made its Netflix premiere in January of 2023.

28. Casablanca

@Reddit

Not to be mistaken with the well-known movie Casablanca (1942), this television drama was an attempt, and failure, to duplicate the success of the original film. But, due to its unfavorable reviews, this 1983 television program only ran for one season.

29. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

@Reddit

After just one season, Netflix canceled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. In November 2023, Bryan Lee O’Malley, the show’s creator, made the cancellation public on social media.

30. Baby Bob

@Reddit

New parents Walter and Lizzy, together with their six-month-old son Bob, who can speak like an adult, were the subject of the show. The show was a failure, with only two seasons and fourteen episodes (five of which were never broadcast) despite its intriguing concept.
