Some people say that movies are like dreams with our eyes open. Then, horror films are waking nightmares. They give us a chance to face our unconscious anxieties head-on, usually for amusement but occasionally specifically to frighten ourselves. Keep scrolling to see 30 scary movies even cinephiles can’t handle.
1. IT: Chapter 2

The second IT is far superior to the first (and original) one, which was great. It featured an all-star cast, including Golden Globe nominees Bill Hader and James McAvoy. Perhaps it explains why their dread seems so real. The most terrifying scenes were when Pennywise assumed each Loser’s unique shape.
2. The Orphanage (2007)

This Spanish film was created by Guillermo del Toro and J.A. Bayona. The somber tone is evocative of Pan’s Labyrinth and the suspenseful tension you would anticipate from this team. The absence of jump scares is probably what set this film apart from many others. Not surprisingly, it received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007.
3. Us (2019)

Jordan Peele is a multi-talented man, yet it’s still difficult to comprehend how amazing a comedian can be when creating horror films. He followed up with us after giving us the order to get out. The reason Us is frightening is that the antagonist does not pose as a ghost or monster.
4. Get Out (2017)

This movie follows a young Black man visiting his white girlfriend’s family, only to uncover a horrifying secret beneath their overly polite exterior. Blending social commentary with psychological horror, it builds tension until its shocking and surreal climax.

6. The Final Destination Series

This movie had the biggest influence on scary films in the 90s. And we cannot deny the fact that we pass a log truck in a different lane now. The same is true for tanning beds, nail salons, rollercoasters, and, of course, planes. We will never be able to forget those horrible deaths.
7. The Descent (2005)

This movie will undoubtedly go down in history, probably because Sarah was completely covered in red goo. Korean filmmakers go to great lengths to make their films utterly scary. But this movie definitely kept us on the edge of our seats. A team of college students explores the Gonjiam refuge, which was demolished in 2018 and turns out to be haunted. Despite being a found-footage film, this film is certainly much scarier than The Blair Witch Project.
12. Train to Busan (2016)

The zombies in this film do not play around, just like the other films in this article. They will tackle you like a linebacker and run with all their might. This is not the typical, cliched shuffle we’re accustomed to, which is what made this film so great. In addition to having some very moving scenes, Train to Busan is an excellent film overall.
13. Ringu (1998)

The trend of turning Asian horror movies into subpar American remakes was initiated by Ringu, and there’s a good reason it took off: it’s incredibly scary. The plot, in which a person views a tape and is slated to die in seven days, is the same as in the American adaptation.
14. The Shining (1980)

It is fair to say that this film stands the test of time. This is Jack Nicholson at his best, and they couldn’t have picked a better cast. Is there anything worse than an insane person brandishing an axe? And the fact that The Shining was set in a real haunted house is also incredibly blood-curdling.
15. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

This film is not for the weak of heart. Audition‘s depictions of torture are enough to sicken some viewers. Even worse, it deceives you into believing it might not be that horrible before crossing line after line. Since you’re not supposed to know much about this movie from the start, its reputation kind of spoiled it.
18. The Mist (2007)

This movie centers on a group of townspeople trapped in a supermarket as a mysterious, deadly fog filled with terrifying creatures envelops their town. As fear and paranoia grow, the survivors must confront not only the monsters outside but also the darkness within themselves.

21. Alien (1979)

This is probably one of the spookiest movies ever. It is true that many were utterly afraid of the film when it initially came out, despite the fanfare created by its marketing team. People would either pass out or throw up after watching the chestburster incident.

26. A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Place doesn’t fit under any of those pretensions since it isn’t a conventional horror film. It focuses more on creating tension and suspense, making it more of a thriller, but it still manages to evoke dread. It only uses strain to accomplish this.
27. It Follows (2014)

This movie may not rely on conventional jump scares or gore, but its brilliant use of psychological horror and suspense makes for an incredibly unnerving and memorable experience. The film is about a creature that is spread through very close contact.
